DESCRIPTION
Signed Mildred Thornton, 1827. (the original quilled inscription is more legible under blacklight) Additional genealogy was added by a later relative. A brief search reveals numerous Thorntons in Louisa County VA going back into the 18th century. Maker employed unique technique in which a large stencil was used to leave a narrow white border around the compote to create the tawny background. Old frame appears to be hard birch or maple. Southern theorems are extremely rare.
