Large Sky Blue Wallpaper Bandbox Circa 1830

$0.00

SIZE
13 1/2 x 18 x 12" tall

DESCRIPTION
Opulent large box w/ rare and desirable blue. Not just decorative— interesting. Uncommon and unique design for which I could find no collateral examples. Loosely fits into Carlisle's "Romantic/Neoclassical Design" category. The musician in a garden surrounded by sheep is playing Scottish bag pipes; a pair of cows on each end.

The lid design is shown in Carlisle’s Shelburne book pp 93— not an actual box but a panel. Dated circa 1830 it is identified as “Cornucopia with Flowers.” The large shells are identifiable as Charonia tritonis—trumpet tritons.

Acquired from an old DC estate collection that dates back to the 1960s

CONDITION
Well traveled but sturdy; various repairs and flaws are evident in the photos. 180 year old wallpaper that traveled on stage coaches. Its a miracle these things survive in any condition. Please examine the photos carefully. The photos tell the story.
