Miniature Traveling Bible Box 18th/19th cent
Miniature Traveling Bible Box 18th/19th cent
SIZE
5 x 8 x x 3 1/2” tall
DESCRIPTION
Circa 18th century box was apparently appropriated and customized in 1833 by M. Thustain (possibly a traveling Minister) and was probably used as a traveling desk box. This is an provocative little object that warrants more careful analysis.
The first line of the carved lettering in the top (be not unwise but obey the gospel) is from the Book of Ephesians IV; The second line (and prepare to meet thy God) is from Amos II. Both of these passages are also referenced in yellow hand painted lettering on the bottom of the box beneath the owner’s name. There is a gorgeous sky-blue paper inside bearing a hand painted quote from the Book of Proverbs (Wisdom ways are the ways of life…(Pro. III:5).
Box includes a fine little leather-bound miniature tome of verse from Deuteronomy. There’s also an old auction catalog clipping (possibly v., Sothebys).
Personal collection item.
