DESCRIPTION

Probably sailor-made. I've had this on a shelf for some years and found it in a small NY auction which had listed it as treenware. That's not what it is. This was carved from a single chunk of keratinous material-- possibly baleen. There are a total of 17 compass drawn hex signs that wrap around sides and top. Meticulously crafted w/ precisely fitted slide lid and 4 small compartments (which prompt me to ID it as a spice box). I've tossed through every possibly reference looking for a comp. I think this might be the only example of its kind. Quite early if patina is any indication of age. Interesting and esoteric little shelf piece for a collector who thought he had everything.
