Antique English Chess Set-- Rare incised Barleycorn Variant
Antique English Chess Set-- Rare incised Barleycorn Variant
SIZE
Kings are 3 3/4” tall
DESCRIPTION
Chess set designs weren’t standardized until after 1850. Early sets were always red/white using cochineal dye. Generally bone with components joined by finely threaded joints— typical of early English workmanship. This is a great, beautiful larger size set. The engraved decoration is rare and outstanding.
This is one of several nice early sets from the personal collection of renown New York chess collector Floyd Sarisohn. (https://www.smithtownmatters.com/article-archive-chronological/2012/4/13/floyd-and-bernice-sarisohn-a-lifetime-of-fun-and-games.html)
Sarisohn had an enormous lifetime collection. This is a genuine antique pre-modern set with w/ characteristics of both Barleycorn and George Washington type.
