SIZE
9 1/2 x 11 1/2 x 9 1/2 inches tall
DESCRIPTION
The “Old Hickory” bandbox is documented in the Shelburne collection (v., Carlisle 1960: pp 190-91). Possibly made during his Presidency (1829-36) it depicts a young Jackson as Major General during the war of 1812. The image on the lid is possibly the Hermitage Plantation, Nashville with original log cabin prior to the completion of the Greek revival mansion in 1835. Side images may be New Orleans.
The box bears the original label of New York merchant John Van Steenburgh.
This is a rare object with only three documented known examples including the Shelburne example (very poor condition); and a larger dark blue example (212.0405.2) at the Historic New Orleans Collection Museum. This one has a unique color combination with yellow ground and blue figures.
CONDITION
Well traveled but sturdy. Careful repairs bolstering the lid.
