DESCRIPTION
Identified by Carlisle from the Shelbourne collection as “Charioteer With Bird Drawn Chariot.” (no. 149). “Ethereal scene incorporates two huge imaginary birds harnessed to and towing through the clouds a fantastic bandwagon.” (pp. 43).

The Shelbourn box is lidless. The present box has original lid identifiable as “Dromedary Driver.” The main Shelburne example (pp 29) consists of a lid original to box no 69 which is identified as “Griffins.”

The present box retains its original sales label from 68 Westminster St, Providence, RI. now a downtown promenade about a block from the river. According to the RI Historical Society Henry Cushing may have been a Civil War and career officer buried at Arlington in 1902. Providence Library will likely have access to more specific information thru City Directories regarding Cushing as a Bandbox manufacturer. TBD.

CONDITION
Old interior repair to shore up the lid seam with paper taps. Aside from this the box is sturdy and in VG condition. Yellow is probably the most fugitive background hue and this box retains somewhere around 60-70% of original intensity.
