Large Yellow Ground Squirrels Wallpaper Band Box 19th cent
Large Yellow Ground Squirrels Wallpaper Band Box 19th cent
SIZE
15 x 18 1/4 x 11 3/4” tall
DESCRIPTION
Identified by Carlisle from the Shelbourne collection simply as “Squirrels” (no. 145, pp 33).
The present box has original lid with Roman Classical theme not identified by Carlisle in the Shelburne collection. There is also a quill scripted monogram “A P Nichols Greenwich” (cf. “CT”).
This rare and highly sought estate box is larger than the Shelburne box or any other comp I could find.
CONDITION
Minor innocuous interior repair to shore up the lid seam with paper taps. Aside from this the box is sturdy and in good condition. Yellow is probably the most fugitive background hue and this box retains somewhere around 50% of original intensity which can be judged via contrast with unexposed parts protected by the lid.
