Precisely Turned set of 9 Miniature Nested Boxwood Boxes circa 19th cent

$0.00

SIZE
range from 1 1/4 to 2 1/4” diameter

DESCRIPTION
9 tiny thin-walled, precisely turned English boxwood boxes varying by only 1” diameter from smallest to largest. This means that the nesting is incredibly tight— a level of precision via two factors. First, billets were parallel crosscut milled using the heartwood. Tiny delicate annular rings and rays are visible on lids and bottoms. ( Bocus sp are very slow growing tree/shrubs). Any other milling technique would have resulted in cross grain shrinkage over time such that the 150 year old boxes could not be nested. Second, the English had access to fine precision tools. High quality English steel allowed manufacture of precise gouges, chisels, and something called a “forstner” auger which was likely used in this case. Turning was probably done using a small fine treadle machine lathe of the kind used by clockmakers.

Here is something for tor the miniature treenware collector who thought they had everything. Guaranteed to amaze your friends and family.

CONDITION
Side split in box #2. Also note darker patina of the outermost box (a factor of light exposure over time). Otherwise, Very good condition with no issues with lid fit or nesting/un-nesting.
