DESCRIPTION
Small pair of water color portraits signed by James Herring (1794-1867— Philadelphia, New York, and New Jersey). Herring was an esteemed and well listed American portrait artist, publisher, and gallery proprietor. In his early career he had in a shop in Philadelphia coloring maps and prints. I think these portraits may date from this period in which he was doing work in water colors. Otherwise most Herring portraits are O/C. Estimated date here is around 1815-20— a time in which bamboo turned ”bird-cage” windsor chairs were fashionable. Consistent as well with style of dress. Would make these a very early example of the artist's work.
Known Herring engravings are predominantly well known early Federal Period Politicians and prominent Americans. This leads me to wonder who these sitters were. Script monogram on the lady’s broach appears to be M. D. Further research warranted.
Early frames and glass are slightly different sizes but appear to be same maker and original.
CONDITION
Somewhat rough with some foxing. Main issues are small holes probably from insect damage. Additional conservation work is possibly in order. Nevertheless still quite beautiful as-is. Please examine the photos carefully. The photos tell the story.
