Joseph H Davis Watercolor Portrait c. 1835

$0.00

SIZE
8 x 9 3/4” (sight); 11 1/4 x 13 1/2” (frame)

DESCRIPTION
Man with top hat on medallion floor cloth. This is one of only around 150 identified Davis Portraits.

J Davis’s with elaborate interior scenes, double sitters, and abundant New Hampshire grain painted furniture are occasionally available for at five figure prices. He also produced more modest single figure compositions with smaller floor cloths such as this one. There is an excellent comp in AARFAC (acc# 35.300.1). (see last photo). This is a female portrait exhibited and published as “The Frugal Housewife.” (v., Rumford 1981., American Folk Portraits, fig 52). She could almost be the wife of the one we possess (aside from slight variation of floor cloth). Facial detail was invariably rendered with pencil.

CONDITION
Paper conservation at upper and lower right corner; also conservation of small tear top of sheet. The image itself is original and excellent.
