DESCRIPTION
Pair of early Hudson River School landscape oil on canvas. Unsigned but evidence suggest the hand of Thomas Cole. On the cow painting the artist used the area of the canvas outside the oval to mix paint and dabble. There is a cursive pencil inscription identifying the scene as "View up Catskills." This is where Cole lived and did many of his earlier works during the 1830s. The harbor scene displays a convention in which the luminous sunset is accented using linear vertices-- a technique used in other signed paintings. On the harbor scene the canvas area outside the oval was given a brown wash. There is an 1830s Cole in the NYHS collection which is a larger oval but also uses a brown wash outside the oval. General quality and artistry is certainly consistent with other works by Cole-- especially comps curated at the New York Historical Society. Obviously, being unsigned the above is conjecture. Irregardless, these are very fine quality early 19th century luminist landscapes of uniquely small size.
CONDITION
After careful inspection I believe the oval mats may be older and original; but the fancy gold gesso frames are probably later 19th century. While the subjects and materials vary between the two both are definitely by the same artist and must have been executed as a pair. Under blacklight there is no evidence of inpainting or repair on either painting. The gold gesso mats are a bit rough and slightly warped with splits and repairs.
