PA Bookplate or Merit Reward Fraktur 19th cent

$0.00

SIZE
6 1/4 x 9” (sight); 9 x 11 3/4” (frame)

DESCRIPTION
Likely Southeast PA. Fine and colorful rendering.  Period grain painted frame and glass.

This is one of three frakturs that were sourced from a picker who claimed to have found them in an estate sale in York PA. Its a shame to break them up but we have no more wall space and sobeit. I had the benefit of examining all the pieces together and can affirm that the paper, colors, and workmanship is consistent. Relatively unrefined work is more like school girl rather than school master art— which might date this piece as circa early 1840s (if the artist was in fact H. Hess). I did a cursory net search and found no obvious PA records for Henrietta Hess, B., 1833. But the Hess sir-name is very common in Germanic southeast PA so additional genealogical research is recommended.

Ex personal collection.

CONDITION
Two very small tears on the right side of sheet which do not intrude into the painted border. These were professionally conserved with small tabs. There is also a thin acid-free barrier paper between the sheet and the card foundation. Faint fold in center. Otherwise very good condition.
