Berks County PA Fraktur by Martin Bechall dated 1811

$0.00

SIZE
8 1/4 x 13 1/4" (sight); 10 x 15 1/2" (including frame)

DESCRIPTION
Unsigned but clearly the work of Martin Brechall (1757-1831). Ex Revolutionary war solder was present at the surrender of Cornwallis, Brechall became schoolmaster in Lehigh County. His works are from Lehigh, Northumberland, Schuylkill, and Berks County. This one cites Manheim Township in Berks County. There's no way I can translate this but I think "Dieserbeiden" means "these two"  suggesting this might be a Taufschein for  Peter Offer and Gutharina; I surmise married in 1795. For other examples check out the digital collection at the Philadelphia Free Library which has numerous examples of Brechall's work. A bit rough condition but authentic, vibrant, and displays well w/ nice Period frame. Ready to hang.

CONDITION
As I said, rough but priced accordingly. The crease marks indicate it was poorly stored, folded in 8ths. Most attrition around the creases and margins. Professionally restored and conserved at some time and appears to be stable and sound. Please examine the photos carefully. The photos tell the story.
