DESCRIPTION

Edgar Adolphe, 1808-1890 was active in Brighton in the 1830s to mid 1840s. You can find an interesting and thorough bio for this well listed artist by googling: "portraiture in Sussex before Photography" then hit the link on Adolphe. Sussex was and still is a hub for portraiture. Adolph was one of the best of the early masters. This portrait has one of Adolphe's early Brighton labels which includes a lovely albeit saccharine poem touting the wonderment of profile portraiture.

The sitter here is identified by a penned inscription "Elizth Wyatt, 1824." I am informed that this date is probably an incorrect post hoc recollection as this label and address were probably used circa 1830s. In any case, a lovely lady and beautiful rendering in a period solid burl wood frame and it has been carefully glazed on the back to allow exposure of the label.

CONDITION
Time-capsule condition. Appears to have had little exposure to light for 185 or so years-- which accounts for the fact that the front is amazingly bright and clean-- complete devoid of any foxing or discoloration whatsoever. Its a miracle.
