DESCRIPTION
The Solveig was a three masted Norwegian Bark Clipper, 619 lbs gross tonnage. Flying the American flag on the foremast is maritime protocol when harboring in an American port. This is definitely an American painting and tho unsigned details including canvas size, composition, and brushwork are consistent with the work of Boston artist William Pierce Stubbs. Notwithstanding lack of lighthouse (obscured by the other boats) the background is typical of Stubbs rendering of Boston Harbor.

The Solveig perished March, 1903 in a storm off the coast of Fremantle. In 2012 the site was excavated by archaeologist Nicolas Bigourdan, Dept of Maritime Archaeology, Western Australia Museum. The final report is available online. Refer to last photo-- which shows an early newspaper photo of the bark after wrecking.

Interesting history and a beautiful, large decorative painting in nice Period gold frame.

CONDITION
Excellent condition with a few minor abrasions but no inpainting or restoration evident. Please examine the photos carefully. The photos tell the story.
