Eastern New England Highboy, Maple c. 1775
Eastern New England Highboy, Maple c. 1775
SIZE
6 ft 1” tall; base 38” wide; case is only 18” deep
DESCRIPTION
Unique sharp keeled slipper foot has a projecting “heel” more like a boot than slipper. An interesting comp is found with a more formal bonnet top piece in the Yale University RIF archive attributed to Rhode Island or Eastern Connecticut. (see enclosed photos). I could find no comparable examples of this apron or drawer arrangement. The top drawers in each section are faux double drawers— actually single long drawers with the fronts molded to resemble double drawers. All the elements, including molding and other details are fine and delicate. This chest is perhaps a vernacular version of the Yale University chest. Given the apron and other elements, Eastern Connecticut is a reasonable theory for origin.
