DESCRIPTION
White pine— Likely Rhode Island.. American Joint stools are exceptionally rare. Most we see have more typical vase- reel- vase in the manner of tavern tables. This one has reel- elongated vase- reel turning and a similar example is shown from the Boston Museum of fine arts. Theirs has a Boston Provenance but there is some thought it might have been made in Rhode Island. The obvious insect damage alludes to a Rhode Island provenance. In addition note the lower leg “umbrella” turning which harks of a motif found in early 18th century William and Mary case pieces.

This piece was ex life-time collection of the late Marian Atten who focused entirely on Pilgrim Period objects. Marian had things rarely seen even in books.

CONDITION
Side block and battens under the top are set with clinched 18th century rosehead nails and relate to the early crack on the top. Insect damage was conserved and stabilized with PVA.
