John Always, NYC Continuous Arm Windsor c. 1795

$0.00

SIZE
37 1/2” tall crest. Seat height 17 1/4”

DESCRIPTION
Nearly identical to a Brooklyn Museum chair signed “J. Always.”. (Ref: Goyne-Evans, pp. 199-200). The unique feature of these chairs is use of an oval sackback type seat with grain running side to side. Most continuous arm chairs have tight narrow seats because grain runs front to back. John Always chairs were more accommodating for people with bigger butts. Otherwise this is a classic New York chair with lower arched crest and deep bulbous turnings. Nice early black paint with gilt detail probably added in the 1820’s.

CONDITION
Three large chamfered 19th cent cleats cleats were fastened underneath using cut nails and pre-gimlet screws to reinforce seat crack which probably appeared early after the chair was made. Otherwise very good and it is very rare to find a CA windsor with no major breaks in either the crest or where the arms bend forward. Please see photos.
